Apathy

I have noticed an increasing apathy on this site, several posts and no I'm not complaning about mine, before you all start, as you undoubtedly will, lying unanswered by users who previously joined in, but now prefer to post endless jokes or remain inactive for 100 secs.

What can these punters be doing for 100 odd secs, on a website, without dying of boredom?...It seems the majority of people prefer to sit twiddling their thumbs and staring vacantly into space, hmmm is this a productive way to spend 1 hour 40 minutes of precious time...it is hardly a good advert for the Zone when the committment level of most users is hovering somewhere around zero...

Post 2 by elmira (Veteran Zoner) on Saturday, 25-Jun-2005 11:38:42

Well, they might need those 100 secs to read all the posts in a topic... Or people might use the site to chat while checking their mail or doing some reading on other sites, so are inactive for some time... What's the problem. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe the site doesn't really show if someone is inactive, but only how much time passed since they last clicked on a link on the site...

Post 3 by Lupinsgirl (I can't call it a day til I enter the zone BBS) on Saturday, 25-Jun-2005 12:15:37

Yes in the user profile it does. Or they coud be reeding something like grifedey that takes awile to reed

Post 4 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Sunday, 26-Jun-2005 8:07:07

Hmmm somehow I doubt it, if they were doing something constructive they would not be shown as being idle for X amount of time...

Post 5 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 26-Jun-2005 8:47:34

Sometimes, I'm idle for awhile, because I think it shows you as that if you're typing a message. (I really need to remember sometimes to type it in a word processor first and paste it on here.) Anyways, other times, I leave the computer to do something real quick and end up staying away longer than I thought I would. SO that could be some other reasons. *smiles*

Well, one might question how productive a use is of an hour and 40 minutes spent clicking on other users’ profiles in order to establish how long they have been idle. Maybe people do other things at the same time as being logged into the site. After all, being logged in here does not take up every ounce of one’s concentration …

Post 7 by Freya (This site is so "educational") on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 5:47:48

OMG call the message board police!! Pple are remaining inactive for 100 seconds - how could they when they could be replying to Goblin's most fascinating board posts eh?
What a load of tosh...I am sure loads of members log on to several sites at once and click between them, or even do something else at home whilst logged on, that's not apathy that is called having a life!

Goblin stikes again......

Post 8 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 10:07:51

<grin> I tyhink being idle on here for 100 seconds, on the contrary, shows that you are being productive, .. this site and "productivity" don't really go together that well in my mind.

Post 9 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 11:56:14

I was not clicking on the profiles for 1 feckin hour, and 40 feckin minutes, I was browsing and trying to decide on an ending for my vampire story....

Post 10 by sugarbaby (The voice of reason) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 12:05:53

ah but you see, people will draw their own conclusions. having raised the point that people spend too much idle time on here, people will make the assumption that you are checking on specific users to see what they're doing. now, I just clicked on your profile twice in the last 10 minutes, and you were shown as idle for 156 seconds, and 197 seconds respectively. so that is more than 5 minutes of idle time! now it is possible you might have been posting to boards during that time, but we're not to know that! all i know is, you were showing as inactive, now, might I post to the boards saying that you're not using your time on here constructively? possibly, but I would rather like to think that you were probably otherwise engaged.

Post 11 by Harp (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 12:11:09

where as i'd jump to the former conclusion on the bases that, from my limited time on the boards, goblin doesn't do constructive things! *grin*

Post 12 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 12:29:28

Yes we know all about assumptions and the damage they cause dont we eh....You would like to think I was otherwise engaged ha! I find it impossible to believe that you could possibly have a positive thought concerning me....

Post 13 by sugarbaby (The voice of reason) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 12:31:26

well you can think what you want, as you obviously do. anyone who is not active for less than 100 seconds must be doing something unconstructive, oh, apart from if that someone is you, in which case you are making full use of your time on this site ...

Post 14 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 12:34:48

As always and yes my mind is solely my own

Post 15 by sugarbaby (The voice of reason) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 12:36:15

well that's a matter for another topic ...

as aposed to what exactly? a time share mind that you were tricked into buying? a holiday mind that you share with another asylum escapee on the south coast of portugal 6 months of every year? or perhaps a floating mind that you sleep in by night but which is rented out to tourists during the long hot summer days for fishing trips? what on earth are you babbling about man?

Grow up you sad ignorant fecker, that jibe is clear evidence as if any is needed, that you are without doubt as childish and shallow as the average teenager, and just as insecure, only a completely ignorant imbecile would make such a stupid thoughtless remark...and only a retard would find it amusing...

Post 20 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Monday, 27-Jun-2005 13:38:27

Hehe, oh boy, why does a comment like that brand harp insecure? Granted it is the most popular word in goblin's vocabulary and can be an explanation for anything from killing a slew of people to making asexual advances on girls and, of course the only reason why someone would challenge his consistent, thoughtful and well justified criticisms posted publically on boards regarding other users, criticisms that he of course is not subject to because his mind is his own, which is more than can be said for the poor rest of us, Harp, where you get your mind, I managed to rent mine at a yard sale but apparently have to give it back in July, not sure what to do after that, but I must come across something.

no no b I think it was my comment about the voices that did it *grins*.

Post 22 by Harp (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Tuesday, 28-Jun-2005 10:52:44

my mind is a little less than half my own B. it spends 2 days a week in an old peoples home tending to the ill and infirmed! another day teaching police recrutes the difference between wooden chair legs and army issue assault rifals! plus a further 17 hours trying to find the cunningly hidden number 15 bus stop on its way back to me! i can only say that goblin is very lucky having one all to himself like that!

claire is right though. his comments must have been aimed at her though and not at me because i, like yourself, have found my way onto his ignore list!

Post 23 by sugarbaby (The voice of reason) on Tuesday, 28-Jun-2005 10:56:58

wow your mind does do quite a bit of wandering then! and it's always the same mind that comes back to you is it? grin. and I have now joined you two on goblin's ignore list...

Um, maybe people ran out of hypothetical questions to ask? You can only be hypothetically stranded on an island for so long, or have unlikely but dire things happen to you where you'll need to know exactly what you'd do in that instant. LOL!

Post 26 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Saturday, 02-Jul-2005 11:42:18

If they can run out of ideas so easily on a website how will they manage in the real world...

Post 27 by Harp (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 02-Jul-2005 12:10:59

i don't think that running out of ideas actually comes intoo it! but there is hardly much point in coming up with new and original questions if the person being asked isn't listening! after all we're all on ignore!

as to your comments on how we'd cope in the real world! just imagine if we were all sat in a room together with each other and not conversing on a public notice board. you wouldn't have an ignore button to press everytime we questioned a bit of your floored logic or disagreed with you on a point of topic! now tell me, who needs to be concerned about who'd cope well in the real world?

by the way just in case anybody is wondering why i am bothering to respond to somebody who i know has me on ignore? it is because i am hoping that the ignore feature will be removed soon!

Post 28 by sugarbaby (The voice of reason) on Saturday, 02-Jul-2005 15:54:40

Dan makes a very good point. In the real world, you can’t just ignore the people whose opinions you don’t want to listen to, or who question who you claim to be. Also, in the real world, people don’t generally sit around talking about hypothetical situations, they get on with their lives. Although I imagine that for some, a website such as this one is as close to reality as they get. After all, on a website like this one, you can invent a life for yourself, a few friends, couple of kids, a stalker or two and if you make it believeable enough, people will talk to you, and if they don’t believe you you can just put them on ignore and stick with the ones who buy your stories. But in the real world it’s a lot harder to pretend to be something you’re not.
